Q&A: Chef Matthew Chung, Seoul Refined host
09 October 2016
Meet Chef Matthew Chung, co-owner of The Beastro, Seoul and co-host for the latest Life Inspired Original food series, Seoul Refined.
You might have recognised Matthew from Chef’s Foodcation, or perhaps foreshadowed this latest gastronomic collaboration when he appeared alongside Michelin-starred Chef Alvin Leung in our previous series, Seoul Extreme.
If there’s one word to describe’s Matthew’s onscreen presence, it would be charismatic (see for yourself here). This time, we put Matthew on the spot and asked him what really went down behind- and off-camera.
It’s always a fantastic feeling to work with someone who brings his A-game every single day.
Give us the spiel – what is it really like co-hosting with Chef Alvin Leung?
Simply put, working with Alvin is awesome. I’m always learning something new when working with him, and it’s always a fantastic feeling to work with someone who brings his A-game every single day. Putting together Seoul Refined from start to finish has been one of the most satisfying TV projects I’ve ever worked on, and it’s all thanks to Alvin, our incredible crew, and the amazing people over at Life Inspired.
What were some of the best moments during the shoot?
The best moments on any shoot happen because you’ve been working with the same people all day, every day, for weeks — they become like family. It’s one of the reasons why chefs like doing TV, I think. It’s a similar type of submarine-like environment, working shoulder to shoulder with the person next to you where you get to know your teammates better than you know yourself; you develop your own kind of rhythm, patois, and a million little inside jokes.
How would you describe your experience working with Life Inspired? (Be honest!)
Working with Life Inspired has been an absolute blast! There aren’t too many networks that can pull off a show like Seoul Refined, and Life Inspired has just knocked it out of the park with this one. Even though we’ve wrapped up shooting Seoul Refined, I still keep in touch with the team from Life Inspired. Great, great people.

A fun one: Any — embarrassing — scenes you hope won’t make the final cut of Seoul Refined?
Ack. So many. When you’re in front of the camera for twelve, fourteen hours a day, sometimes you end up going a little stir crazy. I’m sure our camera crew got plenty of footage of my terrible dancing. Hopefully it doesn’t make the cut — after all, the show is called Seoul Refined, not Seoul Uncoordinated.
Find out if any of Chef’s Matthew Chung’s dance scenes made the cut. Watch the premiere of Seoul Refined, a four-part food series, on Sunday, 9 October at 10pm MY/SIN/HK, only on Life Inspired.
Next up, we’ll be asking chef Matthew Chung about his five favourite restaurants in Seoul, which he thinks best represent the city, so keep and eye on the site’s Good Reads section.
